Have you ever “drawn a blank”
when someone speaks to you in Spanish?
.
How much more confident would you feel if You Understood Spoken Spanish?
• Imagine how many doors would open if you could speak to anyone and understand them.
• Imagine if spoken Spanish stopped feeling lightning fast so you wouldn’t struggle to understand everything you hear during a conversation.
• Imagine how much faster you would improve your Spanish if you could understand native speakers in movies, radio, and television.
Now, if you think:
• “When native speakers talk, it sounds so fast to me, and I am afraid I will never be able to keep up.”
• “When I do start to speak Spanish, the Spanish-speaking person assumes I am very fluent and they start speaking Very fast and I do not understand and I get nervous and then I draw a ‘blank” and can not answer them back.”
• “Native speakers talk so fast and I can’t understand what they are saying. I get so frustrated and feel like I will never understand them.”
.
Well, let me tell you. IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE LIKE THAT!
Why do so many students struggle to understand spoken Spanish in real life even after doing well on language apps or getting good grades in Spanish class?
Because they practice their listening and comprehension skills the wrong way.
They choose materials that are either too simple or way too difficult for their level, but they don’t follow a natural progression that allows them to improve their listening skills gradually.
We’ve all been there at some point while learning a new language:
After learning the basics and progressing well, you memorize phrases for simple real-life conversations.
One day, you feel confident enough to use one of the phrases you’ve practiced dozens of times.
You go ahead and say it out loud,
You do it so well the Spanish speaker assumes you are fluent and starts speaking VERY FAST,
You can’t understand and then draw a blank without knowing what to do… It’s SOOOOO AWKWARD!
We’ve all been there at some point while learning a new language. It also happened to me when I was learning English and French (I hated it more than realizing I forgot my phone at home after reaching my destination. UGH!!!)
Over time, I have received many inspiring emails from students whose determination and kindness inspired me to create learning materials designed to empower them.
Here are a few of the stories that moved me:
“I work in an area that has a lot of hispanic folks that need help. It would just be nice to be able to communicate with them.”
“I work in a hospital and there are Spanish speaking patients and relatives that I wish I could help more instead of saying “Lo siento, no hablo espanol.”
“Going Peru to help a church. I will be traveling there for five years. Retired Army Officer. I want to help others.”
“I’d like to be able to greet, ask how the students are doing, what can I help them with, tell them where different places on campus are, library hours/location, answer basic research questions.”
“To be more fit to the future job I want to take- Spanish bilingual customer representative in a call center. It’s fun learning the spanish language. It has a wide array of lessons.”
“I want to learn Spanish mainly to keep my brain active… it’s a challenge and gives me something to try to accomplish (I am in my late 60’s). And with the increasing Hispanic population, I want to be able to better converse with my latin neighbors and team members at work.”
“I am a builder, and so many of my workers speak Spanish as their first language…some, as their only language. I see how much it means to them when I try to learn their language…so I want to speak fluently.”
“I want to help my children learn Spanish and inspire them” – “I would like to be able to socialize and interact in the office in a casual way. I would like to be able to interact with people.”
“I would love to communicate with non-english speaking migrants in order to help them assimilate and just find their way to important places. Also, if I am in the grocery store I could help them with finding items and explaining prices. I know most items are labeled in Spanish, but where are they in the giant stores?”
Stories like these inspired me to create the learning materials I wish I had when I started learning foreign languages.
So I decided to create something to empower students who want to open doors at work and serve people around them and their communities.
Now, let’s imagine 2 scenarios:
-Scenario 1:
Think about next week at work. A Spanish-speaking customer comes in, and you say to yourself, “today is the day I use my Spanish to stand out and get those promotions rolling in.”
.You greet the customer in Spanish, but his reply sounds SO FAST it’s hard to catch everything.
.You start to feel the pressure to respond quickly, get nervous, and then you draw a blank, feeling awkward and embarrassed in front of your coworkers (and you feel so miserable you just want to say, “Houston, we have a problem” and to crawl into a hole to eat 10 boxes of Oreos, never to be seen again!)
.
-Scenario 2:
Compare that person to you…
You are at work in a few weeks, and a Spanish-speaking customer enters.
You greet her, she replies in conversational Spanish, and you confidently understand everything she says. You answer easily and close a new sale in front of your boss within minutes.
And now compound that 10 times per week for the next six months.
You do the math.
.
.
Now, let’s imagine something that could make things much easier for you…
What if you could listen to native Spanish speakers and pause time for a few moments,
So you could get the help of a translator speaking in your ear to help you understand the parts you missed,
And then go back in time quickly so you can hear the same Spanish sentence again after understanding the bits you missed?
That would make things easier, wouldn’t it?
.
Well, now YOU CAN TRY IT!
.
.
.
I’ve created practice materials that help you recreate that process using digital technology, which does wonders for your listening.
.
Whether you started watching Dora The Explorer a few weeks ago or you’ve been binging on telenovelas for years, this is YOUR time to finally understand spoken Spanish gradually, at your own pace.
Even if you have great difficulties picking out individual words in sentences when spoken to (and it makes you want to smack them in the head so they finally start speaking slowly)
Even if you find it challenging to set time aside to focus on your learning
Even if you struggle to retain vocabulary and sometimes feel like giving up and going for margaritas at noon on weekdays.
This course has been designed to help you do that (Understand more spoken Spanish, not drink margaritas at noon. Sorry!)
.
.
Do you die a little inside whenever you “draw a blank” when someone speaks fast to you in Spanish?
Would you rather bite into a raw beet than continue wasting time and missing opportunities at work?
Would you like to confidently understand spoken Spanish, open doors, and get paid more?
Since I’ve concluded that perfecting time travel would take too much work, I’ve decided to keep things simple and make it easy for you to practice using standard digital technology (after all, we have managed to travel in time very slowly. When compared to our childhood, we actually live in the future!)
.
I’ve created the learning materials I wish I had when I was learning English and French so you don’t have to go through the struggles I went through.
.
Which, among many other things, included hundreds of hours listening to the Beastie Boys and their intricate lyrics, rewinding movies like a maniac, and watching reruns of popular TV shows until I developed a major crush on Jennifer Aniston (“Friends” and “Seinfeld” were my favorite shows back then!)
Through my personal observations and experience as a language learner and a language tutor on 3 continents (along with lots of research and testing), I’ve come up with a system to help students improve their listening skills gradually by following a natural progression using the 5-Step Spanish Comprehension Building Blocks and digital technology to make things easier for you (so you don’t have to buy new remote controls after wearing them out like I did!)
.
.
.
At this point, you may be wondering:
.
“Is this Course Right for me?”
This course is NOT for people with zero knowledge of Spanish or beginners who are just getting started (Sorry, but I need to be very clear. Real beginners need something different, and I’m currently working on a separate course for them.)
.
This course (the one on this page) is for people who already have a basic knowledge of Spanish vocabulary and basic grammar and who want to understand more spoken Spanish.
.
If you know how to introduce yourself and talk about the things you like or want. If you can understand very slow Spanish, and want to understand more spoken Spanish in real life, then this course is the one for you.
If you took high school Spanish and you know the basics, this course can help you.
.
This is a hands-on course designed to help you understand more spoken Spanish by listening to lots of spoken Spanish at a manageable level of difficulty.
.
This course is designed to suit different levels of spoken Spanish comprehension to help beginners and intermediate students.
.
We will start with the basic building blocks of spoken Spanish by going over letters that sound similar to English and the group of letters that sound considerably different from English.
.
After that, we will review the sound of frequently used Spanish words selected using the 80/20 Principle (the few things that matter most), so you can get used to how they sound in everyday conversations and gain more confidence as you practice.
.
Once we have covered the basics, we will review sets of common phrases used in everyday life (no curse words are included for now. Sorry! But don’t worry. You’ll eventually find them on your own, and they can be delicious when used at the right time!)
.
Next, we will continue to follow a natural progression by going over groups of S-L-OOO-W paragraphs that are part of articles about Latin American culture using the Dual Spanish Method (so you can have more topics of conversation when you meet someone.)
.
First, you will listen to each sentence in Spanish at a slow speed,
.
Then, in English,
.
And then, in Spanish again at a slow speed to test your listening skills one more time and compare them with your first try. This will help your mind fill in the gaps and connect the pieces together to help you understand more Spoken Spanish.
.
It’s like having audible training wheels for your Spanish listening skills!
.
They help you build confidence as you practice without falling over or making the process exceedingly frustrating (Life is hard enough already. Spanish doesn’t have to be!)
.
In the end, we will go over the entire article one more time at a moderate speed, only in Spanish, to give you a chance to test your comprehension one more time.
.
.
In the next section, we will listen to conversations about social and work-related scenarios that talk about the present, past, and future at a moderate speed using the Dual Spanish Method.
.
In the last section of the course, we will review a set of articles using the Dual Spanish Method at a fast-paced conversational pace as a final challenge.
.
.
.
“But what if I can’t find the time to practice and focus on my learning?”
This course has been designed to make it easy to find time to practice and avoid one of the most common problems students face when learning Spanish.
.
Each lesson is 15 minutes long, and to make things easier, you only need to listen to one lesson per day (a few lessons are a little longer, but they’re close to the 15-minute mark).
.
The course includes 15 hours of listening materials emphasizing the intermediate section to help students get past the intermediate plateau.
.
These learning materials focus primarily on audio so you can listen and practice on your phone while doing everyday activities.
.
.
To ensure you are ready to move on, you will be required to listen to each lesson a few times until you can fully understand it in Spanish.
.
Depending on how much time you have, you can listen to one lesson a few times per day or listen to the same lesson one time on multiple days until you are ready to move on to the next one. You can move at your own pace!
.
What’s most important is that you listen to at least 15 minutes per day.
Many happy students use these learning materials to practice during their daily commute when they exercise, or while walking their dog (prancing is always encouraged!)
.
If you are doing something that would allow you to listen to music, you can use that time to practice your Spanish listening skills (with or without earphones, depending on how many nosy people are around you)
.
.
.
Additional formats:
Each audio accompanies a printable PDF transcript so you can read along and make notes the first few times you listen to a lesson.
..
.
.
After listening to a lesson while reading the transcript one or 2 times, you can continue listening on your phone without reading the transcript until you can understand the entire lesson in Spanish.
.
Besides accessing these learning materials online using a desktop computer, tablet, or smartphone, you’ll also have the option to download the audio files and PDF transcripts to practice on your devices, even if you don’t have a connection.
.
If you are an iPhone or iPad user. You’ll be able to access your course using Teachable’s app for iOS, so it’s easier to use on the go (I’ll explain more about Teachable later.)
.
By the way, Teachable’s iPhone app also works for Macs with Apple Silicon processors, including M1, M2, and all the other M series processors.
.
If you are an Android user, you can access this course using Teachable’s mobile-friendly website on the go. No problem!
“What version of Spanish is this? European or Latin American?”
This course focuses on the Spanish spoken in Mexico (I’m a native speaker.)
I recommend you focus on Mexican Spanish if you live in the American continent or plan to visit Latin America. It is the country with the largest population of native Spanish speakers in the world and is also one of the biggest producers of entertainment materials in Spanish.
.
In general, Mexican Spanish is spoken at a slower pace than Spanish in other countries like Spain, Argentina, Venezuela, or Cuba. Furthermore, a large majority of Spanish speakers who live in the United States are of Mexican origin.
.
So, if you plan to visit, happen to live in, or work with companies from the U.S., the version of Spanish you will most likely encounter is the one that will give you the most opportunities to practice.
.
However, focusing on understanding the Spanish spoken in one specific country first will not prevent you from understanding or communicating with Spanish speakers from other countries.
.
Just as it happens with the English spoken in the United States, Canada, England, or Ireland, the biggest variations are found in the regional accents, local words, slang, and regional expressions, but the underlying foundations are very similar. Understanding other accents is much easier when you’ve worked on a foundation to understand spoken Spanish in a specific accent first.

“Does it work? What do other people think about this?”
Here are a few testimonials from students who’ve tried this method in the past:
.
“This program is very useful. After trying several different ones over the years this has been the best one by far. While other programs have been helpful, and I learned from them, Spanish for Your Job gets to the pertinent material without a lot of unnecessary information. Being able to read along while listening allows me to separate the Spanish words, all while improving my spelling and reading skills.
The lessons are also a great way to learn about the culture, history, and current events. I’ve never come across a program that includes so much. Please keep up the great work I’ll be spreading the word to all my interested friends”
– Amy B. – Reading, Pennsylvania
.
.
“I have tried many methods of improving my Spanish speaking and understanding, including watching videos of other teachers.
I have found these Spanish For Your Job materials especially helpful because: 1) The topics are interesting, and the dialogues are especially good for practicing real-life conversations; 2) The English translation immediately after the Spanish phrases gives me immediate confirmation of my interpretation of the phrases; and 3) The consistency in the format combined with the brief amount of time it takes to listen make the lessons easy to fit into my day. I would recommend these materials because listening to the radio or TV in Spanish does not give you the feedback that is needed to gain confidence in your comprehension of spoken Spanish.”
– Stephen M. – Accountant – San Antonio, Texas
.
.
The Spanish For Your Job audios and transcripts helped me with a big hurdle in learning Spanish. Understanding Spanish in “real time” when listening to a Spanish speaker is difficult for a number of reasons. The speaker may speak rapidly, not speak clearly or speak with an accent.
I am learning new words every day. Even if I am following the speaker, he or she may say a word or a grammatical construction that I do not know and I lose the context of the message. In real time conversations, I have to listen and understand at the same time I am formulating my response.
These audios and the accompanying materials focus on the issue of understanding Spanish when spoken.
Miguel uses different topics to introduce different words and I learn more if the topic is interesting. He provides different and interesting topics and speaks in different tempos to test my ability to comprehend. The English language translation provided in the audio and transcript gives a quick point of reference for a word or phrase that I did not understand.
The audios and related materials were helpful to me in dissecting and understanding everyday phrases in which the words individually have a different meaning than the phrase itself. It is simple and effective.
The audios and PDF formats allowed me to learn in different settings. Before I go on long trips, I load audios and the transcripts onto my phone. A delayed flight now provides time to learn and review. The more I hear and read, the more comfortable I am speaking Spanish. Repetition is a good thing for me. The Spanish For Your Job package gave me instant repetition to burn the words and phrases into my brain.
– Steven A. – Lawyer – Detroit, Michigan
.
.
“My level in Spanish is intermediate and I am very glad to have been using the Spanish for your job materials on a daily basis, because since I do not have much free time, it helps me practice and refresh my Spanish by devoting only 15 minutes per day.
Learning a language is about time and repetition. The Spanish for your job materials offer information for a variety of different subjects and in a very efficient way ~ including repetition and translation from English to Spanish and viceversa ~ It makes you get used to listening and correcting the mistakes.
Overall, it has helped a lot to improve my skills and vocabulary and since I am working as a PR, being good at languages is one of the greatest assets for my job, and surely these practice materials have helped my fluency a lot and have boosted my confidence while I’m speaking.”
– Alina M. – Public Relations Officer – Athens, Greece
.
.
“I have been using practice materials from Spanish For Your Job for over a year now, and it has been the best online practice guide that I have come across. The fact that the practice material is not hours long makes it a perfect fit for my busy day. On a quick lunch break, I can use my phone or tablet to access a 15-minute lesson and feel confident that in that small time frame I have learned something new.
One of the main reasons I enjoy Spanish For Your Job is the fact that the lesson is Spanish to English and back to Spanish again. This technique helps with retaining the information and it allows you to see exactly how much you are actually comprehending.
Last but not least, one of my favorite characteristics about this Spanish course is the fact that it is taught by someone who actually cares if you are learning and wants you to succeed.
I feel lucky to have stumbled upon this course and I now can’t imagine trying to conquer the Spanish language without it. It has been just over a year and I honestly feel that my skills have improved tremendously. ¡Gracias Señor Lira!”

.
“What about other alternatives I can try on my own?”
We are all adults here, so let’s talk straight.
.
Of course, there are other options you can try, and some of them could be a good fit for you, depending on your priorities, resources, and time availability.
.
In terms of choosing a language learning method to improve your listening and comprehension skills, there are 4 main types of costs to consider:
Financial costs (how much money will be required)
Cost in terms of time (how much time you’ll need to devote per day, per week, and how long it will take for you to see results)
Willpower and frustration (the amount of mental energy and willpower needed)
Opportunity costs (the cost of not doing something else that could have given you better results.
For example, losing 1 year using an ineffective method instead of trying something else. In other words, losing a year without making progress and missing opportunities at work and your personal life.)
Let’s look at a few alternatives you could consider:
1- Continue using language learning apps
.
Language learning apps are a cost-effective way to practice. Still, they usually focus on vocabulary acquisition or basic grammar (as well as adding “beeps” and “dings” whenever possible.)
.
However, they are usually not designed to follow a natural progression to help you understand more spoken Spanish.
.
Because of this, progress is usually VERY slow and can take a very long time.
If you are very patient, have lots of time to spare, and want to focus on learning vocabulary and basic grammar, you could try apps and see how they work for you in case you haven’t already.
.
In other words, the costs of language learning apps are:
Financial costs: Very low
Cost in terms of time: High (slow progress)
Willpower and frustration: High (requires patience; they focus on vocabulary and basic grammar)
Opportunity costs: High (slow progress, missed opportunities)
.
2- Continue listening to podcasts for native speakers
Podcasts for native Spanish speakers are an excellent way to practice because they are convenient and inexpensive.
.
Although they are easy to access, most podcasts for native speakers are too complex for beginners or intermediate students to understand. They can be exceedingly frustrating, which often leads to quitting.
.
However, if you are highly patient, persistent, have lots of free time, and don’t mind hitting the rewind button several dozen times a day, you can give podcasts for native speakers a try and see how they work for you. It’s only a matter of being very, very, very persistent.
.
In other words, the costs of podcasts for native speakers are:
Financial costs: Very low (most are free)
Cost in terms of time: High (slow progress)
Willpower and frustration: Very High (requires a lot of patience, they speak very fast)
Opportunity costs: High (slow progress, missed opportunities)
.
.
3- Hiring an online tutor
Hiring an online tutor is also a convenient way to improve your Spanish because you don’t need to travel abroad. You can have lessons from the comfort of your own home, which is excellent (Video calls Rock! Yaaay!)
.
Although lessons with language tutors work well to help you practice grammar and conversation skills, they are not optimized to improve listening skills because they are live, and you can’t pause them or go back to listen again.
.
Sure, you can ask your tutor to say things more than one time, but the opportunity to practice is limited to the duration of each class.
.
I’m not saying language tutors are not a reliable way to improve your Spanish; they are a great way to learn and gain confidence.
.
However, if you really want to understand more spoken Spanish, hiring a tutor can get expensive over time because you only get to practice for 1 or 2 hours per week at rates ranging from $10 to $40 per hour.
.
Plus, you’ll have to commit to a specific day and time instead of being able to practice over and over while you go about your day listening to practice materials on your phone as many times as you want.
.
In other words, the costs of hiring an online tutor are:
Financial costs: Medium (they can be high in the long term if you only want to focus on understanding spoken Spanish)
Cost in terms of time: Medium (medium progress for listening skills; practice time is limited to live classes)
Willpower and frustration: Medium (if you find a good tutor who is kind and patient)
Opportunity costs: Medium
..
4- Visit a Spanish Speaking Country for an extended time:
Total language immersion is one of the best ways to learn a new language and improve your listening comprehension skills (and try new drinks, of course!)
However, it is expensive (airplane + accommodation + food) and you would need to put your work and personal life on hold for weeks or months.
Also, depending on your current listening level, you may not be able to understand most native Spanish speakers you meet during your trip.
.
In other words, the costs of hiring an online tutor are:
Financial costs: High
Cost in terms of time: High (you would need to devote yourself to living in a different country full-time for a while)
Willpower and frustration: High (traveling can be challenging, and jet lag sucks!)
Opportunity costs: High (You’d have to put your life on hold for a while)
.
.
5- Keep doing what you’ve been doing:
Doing nothing different is always the most straightforward option, but it comes at a high cost. It usually costs A LOT of time.
If you continue doing the same things, how will your Spanish listening skills be in six months or a year?
How many more years are you willing to invest in doing the same things that haven’t worked well so far?
How many more doors will remain closed at work for not understanding Spanish?
How many more opportunities to help those around you will slip by?
In other words, doing nothing is an excellent option if you want things to stay the same way they’ve been.
Take a moment to think really hard about how much every week you don’t take action is costing you.
In other words, the costs of doing nothing are:
Financial costs: Very low
Cost in terms of time: Very high (more years will slip by with the same results)
Willpower and frustration: Low
Opportunity costs: High (You would miss the opportunity to try other methods that would help you move faster)
If you want things to stay the same. Be my guest; you have a right to do so.
.
If you do have the time and budget to take off for several weeks or months to a Spanish-speaking country, I encourage you to do it, but here’s why this course is right for most students:
.

.
In other words, the costs of using 15 Minute Spanish Listening Roadmap to improve your listening skills are:

Willpower and frustration: Low (Lessons are short, and you get help along the way plus transcripts)
Opportunity costs: Low (You can continue with your daily life as you improve your listening skills)
